In the near past 2 Dwarven kingdoms went to war with each other because of pride. To end the war the kingdoms had the son of the metal lords (Stradda the Hammer) and the Daughter of the stone lords (Shamara the axe) joined in marriage. The war ended and the 2 kingdoms began to prosper again. The 2 had a son (Dhurzan) and were traveling from the metal lords to the stone lords kingdom. The small caravan they traveled with, was attacked by a large band of ogres and all were slain save one.
Dhurzan awoke to discover everyone dead and that he was all alone. He wondered around for days before he found a cave to take refuge in. As he entered the cave an odor triggered something and he drew his axe and proceeded. He discovered a large dragon in the middle of this large cave, and charged it. He hit the dragon hard with the axe (not even close to enough to kill the dragon) and chopped through the tail of the dragon. Out of anger, the dragon attacked back with a claw/ claw/ bite. One claw raked across his face removing his left eye and leaving 3 long scars down his face and body, the second claw ripped through his armor and torn his chest open. The bite removed his right hand.
The dragon, upset with itself, went to the major task of saving the dwarf. The dragon summoned the greatest healers and smiths in the land. The chest was repaired. The eye was replaced with black laen. And, the hand was replaced with a mithril hand.
The dragon taught the dwarf how to use the new parts and started training him on how to become a metal/stone lord. It filled his head with languages, art, music, war, and the idea to become a hero.
